Government invests RD$142 Million in athletics track projects

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader’s Administration, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has allocated a significant investment of 142.74 million pesos towards the revitalization of three existing athletics tracks and the construction of a brand-new one, demonstrating their steadfast support for the youth engaged in various disciplines of athletics.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Sports, Francisco Camacho, who revealed that ongoing efforts are underway to reconstruct the athletics tracks at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium and its accompanying warm-up track at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in the National District. Additionally, reconstruction is in progress at the Moca sports complex located in the province of Espaillat.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Sports is spearheading the construction of the San José de Ocoa sports complex, complete with an athletics track and a softball stadium, Camacho elaborated.

Breaking down the financial commitment, Camacho disclosed that the investment for refurbishing just the Félix Sánchez Olympic track amounts to 65,715,430.75 pesos, with an additional budget of 33,984,308.75 pesos earmarked for heating costs. Similarly, the reconstruction of the Moca athletics track is projected to require 33,786,818.73 pesos, while the construction of the Ocoa facility will entail an investment of 9,744,706.71 pesos.

Camacho emphasized that the completion of the Moca and San José de Ocoa projects is slated for the year’s end, accounting for potential delays due to unpredictable factors such as inclement weather, which often hampers construction progress.

He reiterated that the refurbishment of the two tracks at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center forms part of the comprehensive restoration process for all structures within the complex, along with the Parque del Este and others, all in preparation for the XXV Central American and Caribbean Sports Games scheduled for 2026.

Reminiscing about President Abinader’s directive in mid-March to commence repair and enhancement works across all facilities earmarked for the XXV Games, Camacho underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring these venues are primed for the grand sporting event slated for July to August in 2026.
